Famed & Framed

Bite-Sized Art: History, News, Auctions, and More!

Welcome! If you’re new here, every week we send out a newsletter containing:

- One “Frame” of the week - history & opinions about a work of art

- One “Fame” of the week - sales from auctions or other big art news

- One “Find” of the week - a work we like, gallery opening, or surprise!

Frame of the Week

The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí

  • Painted in 1931, the artwork is known for its dreamlike, almost hallucinatory quality that blurs the line between reality and imagination.

  • Although scholars’ interpretations over the years include a commentary on the fleeting nature of time and a representation of the subconscious mind, Dalí himself once said that the melting watches were inspired by Camembert cheese that he saw melting in the sun.

  • Today it is housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Fame of the Week

  • Paysage by Odilon Redon (1840-1916) was sold at auction on February 15th for an astounding €70k. It was estimated to draw just €10-15k.

  • The painting is oil on cardboard and although there is not much literature written on the painting, I personally love how the rough brushstrokes actually give more detail to the rocks even though it may make the painting look more abstract.

Find of the Week

  • The Jeffrey Deitch Gallery currently has an exhibition by Refik Anadol called Living Paintings.

  • From their site: “Anadol’s work merges collective memories of urban life and nature with groundbreaking machine learning and visualization technologies, inviting a poetic and futuristic contemplation of purposeful human-machine collaborations.”

  • See the exhibition now at 925 N. Orange Drive, Los Angeles!

Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.
