Frame of the Week

Family on the Farm (early 1900’s) by John Newton Howitt (1885-1958)

  • This painting exemplifies the pinnacle of Realism, a movement that sought to depict everyday life in an unidealized manner.

  • Howitt, known for his meticulous attention to detail, invites us into a bucolic world where the toil and beauty of rural existence are vividly captured.

  • In a rapidly industrializing world at the time, Howitt reminds us of the fundamental importance of the agricultural lifestyle and the significance of familial bonds in sustaining it.

  • The painting’s enduring legacy lies in its ability to transport us to a bygone era, allowing us to appreciate the challenges, triumphs, and inherent beauty of early 20th-century rural life.
