Frame of the Week

Astronomer (late 1650’s) by Gerrit Dou

  • This painting was painted during the Dutch Golden Age (1575-1675), a period known for its flourishing art scene.

  • The detail that Dou was able to fit into a canvas of this size is astounding considering this painting is a mere 21.6 × 8.3 inches!

  • Dou is known as a Fijnschilder, a group of Dutch Golden Age painters who strove to create as natural a reproduction of reality as possible in their meticulously executed, often small-scale works. - Wikipedia

Fame of the Week

Head of Woman (1960) by Francis Bacon

  • This Bacon was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for €6.4 million Euros on June 21st. This was the most expensive work sold at the auction.

  • This painting is of Mary Redgrave. Supposedly, she was unaware of him painting this - Bacon painted it fully from memory.

Find of the Week

Diver (2020-21) by Abbey Golden

  • On Thursday, June 29th from 7-8pm, Abbey Golden is giving an artist talk at her exhibition Golden Age of Fluidity from gallery Lauren Powell Projects in Los Angeles.

  • Water, for Abbey Golden, is a liminal space — a quantum field of transformative possibility.

  • Golden’s strengths in this series are her own fluidities — her empathy, which enables her to throw her feelings, her non-binary sexuality, and her egalitarianism into new floating bodies.

The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.
