Frame of the Week

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632) by Rembrandt van Rijn

  • This painting depicts an actual event that took place in Amsterdam in 1632. Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, a prominent physician and city councilor, was asked to demonstrate an autopsy on a criminal in front of a group of his colleagues.

  • The painting is one of Rembrandt's earliest works, completed when he was just 26 years old. It was commissioned by the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons, who wanted a portrait of their members in action.

  • The painting was almost lost during World War II. It was moved from Amsterdam to the countryside for safekeeping during the war, but was nearly destroyed when the storage facility it was kept in was hit by a bomb. Fortunately, the painting was unharmed!
