Frame of the Week
Madame X (1884) by John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent was a renowned American painter known for his portraits, landscapes, and watercolor paintings.
This portrait shows Madame Gautreau wearing a low-cut black dress with jeweled straps, which was considered daring and provocative at the time.
Sargent originally painted one of the straps slipping off her shoulder, but after the painting was criticized, he repainted it to show the strap in its proper place.
The painting is striking for its use of color and composition. Sargent uses a limited color palette of black, white, and flesh tones to create a sense of drama and elegance.
