Frame of the Week

The Sower (1888) by Vincent Van Gogh

  • Van Gogh's The Sower exemplifies his unique style of post-impressionism, where he uses bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors to convey emotion and energy.

  • The composition of The Sower is carefully designed to create a sense of movement and dynamism. The sower's sweeping gestures and the rhythmic pattern of the landscape's furrows guide the viewer's eye across the canvas, capturing the essence of the sowing process.

  • Van Gogh's use of color and brushwork in The Sower isn't just about aesthetics—it reflects his emotional state and perception of reality.

Find of the Week

Up Your Game When They Downplay You (2023) by Mars Ibarreche

  • Simchowitz is pleased to present Outsiders, the gallery’s first solo show of works by Mars Ibarreche.

  • “To have a light thought you also have to have a dark one,” they explain. “That’s kind of how I come up with the phrases, by countering some of the dark thoughts that I’m thinking of.”

  • This idea becomes all the more evident in Mars’ large oil paintings, which are often composed and quick intuitive gestures straight from their subconscious.

  • From simchowitz.com

The emotion of beauty is always obscured by the appearance of the object. Therefore, the object must be eliminated from the picture.
